Biography

Melissa Harshman received her MFA from the University of Wisconsin- Madison in 1992. She has taught at the Lamar Dodd School of Art at the University of Georgia since 1993. Harshman has exhibited widely throughout the United States and abroad. She was awarded a University of Georgia Senior Faculty Research Grant in 2019 titled “Explorations in Papermaking”. She was one of the inaugural Arts Lab Fellowship recipients from the University of Georgia for 2022/23, focusing on papermaking wall installations. In 2022 she was awarded the Denbo Fellowship at Pyramid Atlantic Arts Center in Hyattsville, Maryland, focusing on handmade paper. She displayed work at the Impact 12 International Printmaking Conference in Bristol, England in September of 2022. Her work was recently on display at the Hunderton Art Museum in Clinton, New Jersey in Press +, Rebel/Re-Belle at the Asheville Museum of Art in Asheville, North Carolina, When Print Meets Paper at the Robert C. Williams Papermaking Museum in Atlanta, Georgia, and ArtFields 2023 in Lake City, South Carolina. Current exhibitions include Print +: Sameness and Otherness in Contemporary Printmedia, at MOCA Jacksonville in Jacksonville, Florida, Visual Elegy at the Free Library of Philadelphia in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and a solo exhibition at the PaperWorkers Local in Birmingham, Alabama. My research focus encompasses all aspects of printmaking and papermaking. Recent work includes installation as well as traditional printmaking.
