Legion Pool, the University of Georgia’s storied watering hole for the past 80 years, is the inspiration behind Athens-based artist Carol John’s new series of paintings. John, whose paintings generally display abstraction full of frenzied line and color, presents a new restrained sensibility in these works. Making loose references to the painted lines on the bottom of the pool, the meditative act of swimming laps, and the various blues that reflect throughout the atmosphere, the paintings atomizes the experience of a hot summer day at Legion Pool.
Carol John is an artist and designer living in Athens, Georgia. She has exhibited widely, most recently in the 2019 Atlanta Biennial at the Atlanta Contemporary (Atlanta, GA); Jacqueline R. Hamilton Gallery (Lexington, KY); Howard’s (Athens, GA); and Hathaway Gallery (Atlanta, GA).
