Scientific Illustration Collaboration with Biochemistry and Molecular Biology

Last semester, Area Chair of Scientific Illustration Gene Wright’s students completed a project for the Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Department Mini Symposium: Cancer Immunotherapies. The Mini-Symposium featured four speakers, who are top researchers from across the nation studying cancer immunotherapies.  

Professor Wright had his students in ARGD 3310 Techniques and Topics in Science Illustration complete illustrations for the symposia to represent the research of each of the four speakers. Each student teamed with a doctoral student in the Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Department in order to create their poster illustration of the current research based off the various speakers work. The posters all portray research exploring how to reprogram our immune system in order to find new ways for our body to recognize and treat cancer cells. The research explored diverse areas across the field of cancer immunotherapies such as pharmaceutical research on vaccine treatments or the structural biology of common immunotherapies. 

ARGD 3310 Techniques and Topics in Science Illustration focuses on beginning through advanced techniques used in science illustration. Topics range from a beginning to advanced understanding of entomology, ornithology, herpetology, and human anatomy. Following the project, the posters became advertising material to market information regarding the symposium. After the symposium, each speaker was given a framed poster of their research as a gift.
