Jewelry and Metalworks Alumni Earn Recognition by SNAG

Two recent alumni of the Jewelry and Metals area at the Lamar Dodd School of Art, Guadalupe Navarro and Laurel Fulton, have been recognized for their accomplishments by the Society of North American Goldsmiths (SNAG). Both Navarro and Fulton have been invited to participate in SNAG’s 2021 Virtual Conference, Inspire/Aspire: A SNAG Virtual Convening taking place June 24 – 27, 2021.
Fulton will be moderating a Virtual Workshop Panel that will include artists Curtis Arima and Barbara Minor focusing on Tips and Tricks for Virtual Teaching. In the Virtual Workshop Panel, moderator Laurel Fulton will lead a discussion with instructors Curtis Arima and Barbara Minor on their step-ups, tips, tricks and what works and what doesn’t translate in the virtual workshop or classroom. Laurel Fulton is a metalsmith, educator, and currently the Deputy Director at Pocosin Arts in North Carolina. Fulton graduated with an MFA in Jewelry and Metals from the Lamar Dodd School of Art in 2020. Through both photography and objects, Laurel is interested in ideas of curatives, love and human communication. She draws aesthetics from antique medical tools, instruments and healing treatments to augment and bridge the gap from one body to the next.
Navarro will present during the Conference’s Rapid Fire Emerging Artist Presentations. Guadalupe Navarro graduated with an MFA in Jewelry and Metals from the Lamar Dodd School of Art in 2019. Navarro spent his life up until coming to the University of Georgia in Illinois, where he was born on the south side of Chicago. He received two bachelor of arts degrees from Ball State University, one in drawing and painting and the other in visual arts with an emphasis in metals. He cites subjects such as Mexican pride, Mexican drug culture, Catholicism and the current status of undocumented migrants in the U.S. His work currently reflects on his upbringing as a Chicano while examining the cultural impact of Mexican-American society as a whole. His research most recently focuses directly on undocumented immigrants and the stories of their journeys.
