MFA Alumni Accepts Visiting Professorship at Bowdoin College

Deepanjan Mukhopadhyay (MFA, 2018) has accepted the position of Visiting Assistant Professor at Bowdoin College, Maine, where he will be teaching New Media from Fall 2021. Previously, Deepanjan was a Professor of the Practice in Photography at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He recently completed a month-long residency at Stove Works, Chattanooga, TN (through May 2021) and had a solo exhibition of his new work Appropriated Figure-Grounds at Buckham Gallery in Flint, MI (February – March 2021).
Deepanjan continues to be involved in scholarship and advocacy regarding issues of racial equity within the medium of photography. In collaboration with photographer Anthony Francis, Deepanjan presented on the topic of “Subaltern Voice in Photography” at the Atlanta Contemporary (Mar). Along with fellow Dodd alumni Ally Christmas (MFA, 2018) and William Major (MFA, 2019), Deepanjan also presented on “Concerns in Photography: Responsibilities & Actions” at Albion College (February 2021).

Deepanjan Mukhopadhyay (pronounced: vame.me/deep) works in photography, video, installation, sculpture, and new media, investigating shifting meanings within post and neocolonialism while still reflecting on the very mediums of representation that he uses. Deepanjan is originally from Kolkata, India, and received his MFA in photography from the University of Georgia.
Deepanjan’s work has been published in Aperture.org, Burnaway, and PDN Magazine. He has also received honors for his work from Society of Photographic Education, 2015 PDN Photo Annual, and was named one of the Atlanta Celebrates Photography 2017 Ones to Watch. His work has been exhibited in India, Canada, and across the United States in galleries such as Aperture Gallery, New York, NY, and Elizabeth Houston Gallery New York, NY.
