This lecture will focus on the rise (and fall) of marble relief carving in fifteenth-century Florence, focusing on the sculptors active in the third quarter of the century—after Donatello and before Michelangelo. New genres of marble sculpture were invented during this period, a result of the loss of more traditional marble carving employment and also of the growing competition with painting.
