UGA Arts Career and Entrepreneurship Space (ACES) and Athens Gallerist co-director Tif Sigfrids was recently featured in the Vulture’s article, “Ten Galleries Whose Founders Quit The Big City To Become Cultural Trailblazers in the Heartland”.

Tif Sigfrids is the owner and director of Tif Sigfrids Gallery in Athens, Georgia which moved to Athens in June 2018 from Los Angeles, California. Sigfrids represents nine contemporary artists based in the US and abroad as well as work with the estate of the late Danish artist, Albert Mertz. The gallery’s move marks a trend occurring throughout the country. Galleries are leaving large cities like New York, San Francisco, and Los Angeles, previously perceived hubs of arts and culture, to establish themselves in smaller towns. The article explains that many gallerists have felt the pressure of globalization and gentrification, and some small galleries are searching for areas where costs are lower. Sigfrids, who spent time in Athens as a teen, knew the city had a vibrant art scene. It is her hope to engage the Athens art community by establishing a local gallery that is connected to art fairs like NADA in Miami, Frieze in New York, and some of the Los Angeles fairs.
