BFA Exhibition a Success!

The Lamar Dodd School of Art held it’s BFA Exhibition Reception EXTRA! EXTRA! on Friday, December 7, from 6-8 pm, to celebrate the work of the students graduating this December. The sudents in this exhibion chose to vary from the traditional format of dividng the show by area of emphasis, and instead showed all disciplines as one integrated group. The Exhibiton Reception drew a large crowd, with an estimated 300 people in attendance. The students’ work ranged in media from traditional oil painting, to video and assemblages of found materials, and work was shown throughout the building’s three floors.
Graduates were encouraged to create a cohesive body of work that acts as a culmination of their time within the Dodd. Work in the exhibiton spans areas of emphasis that include Printmaking and Bookarts, Graphic Design, Art Education, Drawing and Painting, Photography, Art X, and Jewelry and Metalworks.
From a student’s perspective, the BFA Exit show provides an opportunity to show their peers, friends, and family what they’ve learned over the past four years. For some, it is the largest exhibition they’ve been a part of and it challenges them to articulate a specific theme and mode of making. The exhibition is also a chance for students to engage with peers across areas of emphasis to create something with minimal help from professors.
Exiting Senior Connor Monely explains: “[The exhibiton] was also very important because we (as a class) were in completely charge of the show and essentially had no assistance from professors or faulty in the Dodd. It was a show of students put on completely by students… Attending a show that I had a huge hand in installing, curating, and promoting made it a much more fulfilling night than if I had just had work displayed in it. While there were many hiccups and stressful moments I do truly think that leaving it in the hands of the students in the show makes the event all the more special and meaningful.”
