Maymester in Cortona, Italy
BCMB/GENE 3433. Biology for Medicine. 4 credit hours.
The Biology for Medicine course will cover an array of current topics in biochemistry, molecular biology, genetics, physiology, pathophysiology, and biotechnology, such as cloning, stem cell biology, cancer biology, endocrinology, genomics, human genetics and evolution, and bioethics. The prerequisite for Biology for Medicine is BIOL 1107 (or equivalent). The Biology course will consist of lectures and discussion sessions each day. Students will participate in the discussions with the instructors and will write short essays on selected topics.
ARHI 2111/ARHI 2111H. Introduction to Art History. 3 credit hours.
The Art History course will focus on the art of the Italian Renaissance through lectures and field trips to Rome, Florence, Cortona, and Siena. Each field trip will involve on-site study of major works of art. Students will write four short essays about the works of art seen on the field trips. There is no prerequisite for this course.

Who is eligible?
Students who have completed two years at UGA or another accredited institution and have taken BIOL 1107 or equivalent, although rising second year students will also be considered.

ON THE OUTSIDE OF THE ENVELOPE.
Interested students should also write
a one-page statement giving their reason for applying for the Maymester,
including a mention of career plans, an official transcript, and
two reference letters from faculty or non-faculty if appropriate.
Cost
$4,295 – includes lodging in Cortona, Rome, and Florence
as well as breakfast seven days a week and dinner Monday – Friday
in Cortona. Course-related transportation and museum entry fees
for ARHI2111/ARHI2111H are also included. Students are
responsible for the cost of transportation to and from Italy,
weekday lunches, and meals on Saturdays and Sundays.
If you are eligible for HOPE, you should receive
approximately $1,120 to be used towards the cost of the Maymester.
Four scholarships of $2,000 each will be awarded. If you wish to apply for one of these, please include a brief statement with your application as justification for your need.
There
is a $250.00 application fee that is due at the time of your application.
If you are accepted, this will be applied towards the cost of the
program. If you are not accepted, it will be refunded.

Note: The itinerary for Maymester 2008 is being
finalized. As soon as it is ready it will be posted here. However,
students will leave from Atlanta on May 9, arriving in Rome on May
10, and will leave from Rome at the end of the Maymester on June
4.
